Allegheny County releases 2022 summer concert acts at Hartwood Acres, South Park
An eclectic lineup of pop, rock and classical music acts is set to take the stages of Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater and South Park Amphitheater as part of Allegheny County’s free 2022 Summer Concert Series.
Alternative rockers Soul Asylum will perform on Aug. 19 as one the highlights of the South Park series of 14 Friday night concerts. The group’s 1993 hit “Runaway Train” won a Grammy Award for “Best Rock Song.” The Minnesota-based band played at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration that same year. Three years later Soul Asylum had a platinum record with “Let Your Dim Light Shine.”
Another Midwest alt rock band, Wisconsin’s BoDeans, who rose to prominence in the ’80s, will take the South Park Stage on July 29.
The South Park concerts will kick off on June 3 with the River City Brass followed on the 10th by local favorite Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs a special Saturday concert on July 2 at 8:15 p.m.
Michael Franti & Spearhead with special guest Arrested Development promises to be one of the big draws to Hartwood Acres on Aug. 21, part of the 13-show Sunday concert lineup at that venue. Franti’s band blends hip-hop with a variety of other styles including reggae, jazz, folk and rock.
Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Russell will perform on Aug. 14. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards including for “Best Americana Album” for 2021’s “Outside Child.”
Another highlight at Hartwood is the high energy power punk group The Regrettes, which performs on July 31. The group is led by 21-year-old lead singer Lydia Night, who’s been described as “the new face of feminist punk.” The group is no stranger to Pittsburgh having performed at Mr. Smalls in 2019.
The Hartwood series opens on June 5 with a performance by the Pittsburgh Opera. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs a special Sunday concert on July 3 at 8:15 p.m.
“I’m always thrilled to see so many people taking the opportunity to get out with their friends and family and just enjoying the experience of live music in such beautiful settings,” said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
All concerts are free and begin at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted. They will take place rain or shine.
