3 major concerts, 4 nights — Pittsburgh readies to rock
Pittsburgh baseball fans may not be satisfied with the amount of pyrotechnics provided by the Pirates at PNC Park this season, but Steel City rock and roll fans will surely be satisfied with the musical fireworks the ballpark has in store over the next week.
The coming days feature the “Piano Man,” a slew of 1980s hair metal bands and one of the dominant metal bands of the last 40 years.
Billy Joel
Billy Joel makes his long anticipated return tonight to the home of the Pirates. The concert date was announced last November.
“Billy Joel is one of the biggest concert draws in the world, selling out arenas and stadium across the globe and a favorite here at our park. This will be an amazing night,” said Pirates president Travis Williams on the day of the announcement.
Joel’s hit songs include “Just The Way You Are,” “Uptown Girl,” “The Longest Time,” and “Piano Man.” He’s won six Grammy Awards and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Joel last performed July 1, 2016 at PNC Park. “I don’t have any new (stuff) for you,” he told the packed crowd that night. That may be the case tonight.
Stadium Tour: Def Leppard, Motley Crue
Friday evening may prove to be even wilder when the Stadium Tour stops at PNC Park with a show that features co-headliners Motley Crue and Def Leppard, along with special guests Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The show gets underway at 4:30 p.m. with Classless Act serving as the opening band.
Def Leppard released “Diamond Star Halos” earlier this year, but it’s been years since the other bands released albums with new material.
The Stadium Tour was originally scheduled to take place in the summer 2020 but was postponed until 2021 because of the covid-19 pandemic. It was then postponed again for the same reason.
Metallica
On Sunday, it’s Metallica with support from Greta Van Fleet and Ice Nine Kills at PNC Park. The show is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
Cited as thrash metal pioneers, Metallica has released 10 studio albums and four live albums and won nine Grammy Awards. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
Metallica last played Pittsburgh at PPG Paints Arena in 2018, with their last stop here before that in 2004.
Greta Van Fleet’s album, “From The Fires,” won a Grammy in 2019 for Best Rock Album.
