Bluegrass bands from all over Western Pennsylvania will converge in Oakland’s Synod Hall April 26 for the 21st annual bluegrass concert benefit for St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality.

The Allegheny Drifters, Echo Valley, Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers, Lonesome Lost & Foggy and Fern Hollow will perform at the 7 p.m. concert at the cathedral at 125 North Craig Street in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood.

“Bands love to play this event because the sound is so incredible in Synod Hall, and the setting is great for the audience since they are exposed to a sampling of the best bluegrass music while supporting an outstanding cause,” said Bruce Mountjoy, the longtime host of the Bluegrass Jam Session program on WYEP-FM and the benefit concert’s MC since it began in 1999. “This is going to be a great show with something to please everybody.”

The Allegheny Drifters performed at last year’s benefit.

Tickets are available for a $25 donation, and are available online as well as at the door.

Beginning at 5:45 p.m., the festivities kick-off with a complimentary pre-concert craft ale tasting hosted by the hometown Penn Brewing Co. and light snacks.

All proceeds benefit St. Joseph House of Hospitality, Catholic Charities’ residence for men 50 years and older who have been homeless or threatened with imminent homelessness.

Located in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, St. Joe’s provides private rooms, a full meal service and support for transitional and permanent residents.

The facility houses up to 60 men, more than a third of whom are veterans.
