Pittsburgh-based Dick’s Sporting Goods will open 11 stores in nine states, including five of its recently unveiled warehouse and outlet stores, the company announced Friday.

Two of the traditional stores will be in Massachusetts, along with one in New Jersey and another in Texas.

The sports and outdoors retailer also owns and operates Golf Galaxy. A combination Dick’s and Golf Galaxy store will open in Cumberland, Ga., at the end of August.

The company announced in June it would begin opening two new concept stores: Overtime by Dick’s Sporting Goods and Dick’s Sporting Goods Warehouse, both of which are clearance stores.

Overtime stores will feature name-brand clothing, shoes and more for up to 75% off. The warehouse stores offer even further discounts and open in the form of temporary pop-up stores. One of the warehouse stores opened in late June at Village Square Mall in Bethel Park.

New warehouse stores will open this month in Illinois, Colorado, Virginia, upstate New York and Massachusetts. One new Overtime store will open in Arizona.

The new stores will bring the total Dick’s Sporting Goods locations to 729 across the country.

It is the second Southwestern Pennsylvania retailer to announce the opening of new brick-and-mortar locations amid a pandemic forcing many companies to downsize.

Warrendale-based Rue21 announced last month it would open three new stores — in South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas — after months of closures and furloughs brought on by the covid-19 pandemic.

The shutdowns and furloughs began in March, though staff continued to receive health benefits. About 180 stores began to reopen in May with enhanced safety protocols.

At the same time, thousands of stores across the country have shuttered — at least 6,000, according to an analysis this week from Business Insider. Among them are more than 400 Pier 1 locations, nearly 200 Forever21 stores and dozens of Sur La Table stores. Health supplement retailer GNC filed for bankruptcy in June and could close up to 1,200 locations.
