Starting Sept. 8, Breeze Airways will begin offering more direct flights to Los Angeles International Airport from Pittsburgh International Airport.

Pittsburgh International Airport is getting more direct flights to Los Angeles International Airport because of a shift in service from Breeze Airways.

The airport said Monday that Breeze, a low-cost carrier, is starting nonstop service between Pittsburgh and LAX starting Sept. 8. The move comes after Breeze will shift service from Orange County, Calif., to Los Angeles in September.

Service between the airports will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. Each of those days, an outbound flight will depart Pittsburgh at 9:20 a.m. and arrive in Los Angeles at 11:45 a.m., while a return flight will leave Los Angeles at 12:35 p.m. local time and arrive back in Pittsburgh at 8:15 p.m.

The flights will be operated by the airline’s Airbus A220-300 aircraft, according to a news release. Breeze becomes the second airline to offer service to LAX, joining Spirit, another low-cost carrier.

Breeze started nonstop service to Orange County, just an hour south of Los Angeles, on March 31. Flights between Pittsburgh and Orange County will continue through Sept. 4 and are expected to return in 2024, according to the release.

Breeze has been growing in Pittsburgh and will offer nonstop service to 11 cities through a recent expansion. In 2021, Breeze received about $560,000 from the Allegheny County Airport Authority to subsidize some of its new flights.

Service between Pittsburgh and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., was launched this week, and nonstop service will begin this summer to Portland, Maine; Long Island, N.Y.; and Jacksonville, Fla.

Airport roadway updates

The ongoing $1.4 billion terminal project at Pittsburgh International has created some temporary changes to the roadways at the airport.

Starting Tuesday, the Interstate 376 West ramp to the airport will be reduced to one lane, and the airport entry road will be reduced from three lanes to two, according to the airport authority.

The authority is advising travelers to give themselves extra time to get to the airport, saying: “Drivers should be cautious as they navigate the entrance to airport property: Slow down, drive carefully and stay alert.”

Overheard signage will be updated throughout the construction project, and all airport operations and services will remain accessible.

The new terminal is scheduled to open in 2025.
