T-shirts that feature a character named Astro Chicken are available at Layne’s Chicken Fingers, which recently opened in Oakland.

The chicken is marinated for two days, then breaded and fried and served with crinkle cut French fries, Texas toast and a drink.

That’s the heart of the menu at Layne’s Chicken Fingers, the newest dining spot in Oakland.

The chain’s first Pittsburgh location opened earlier this month at 3621 Forbes Ave., inside the former Halal Guys space on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus, said Layne’s Chicken Fingers district manager Ahmer’e Blackman.

“We wanted to be here for the students … and Oakland is also the perfect spot with so many things happening and all the hospitals right here,” Blackman said.

Blackman said the chicken is halal — Arabic meaning “lawful or permitted.” Halal chicken refers to dietary practices and how the animal is fed and processed.

In addition to original or spicy chicken fingers, the menu features grilled cheese and a club sandwich with bacon, chicken fingers, a slice of cheese and house made sauce, which is based around a thousand island dressing – the other ingredients are secret — and served on Texas toast. They also have a children’s menu.

Layne’s offers dine-in service and delivery via Grubhub, Uber Eats and DoorDash.

The first location opened in 1994 on the campus of Texas A&M University. There is one in Morgantown, W.Va. Blackman said it has just worked out that they are on college campuses.

Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
