The North Shore Tavern is featuring its signature steak on a stone for Pittsburgh Restaurant Week, which has been extended to the week of Jan. 20.

The winter edition of Pittsburgh Restaurant Week has lived up to its name.

Pittsburgh Restaurant Week is being extended for the first time because of last week’s inclement weather.

Two days of snow accumulations led to diners canceling reservations. Snow isn’t predicted for this week but there are below-zero temperatures for most of the week.

“I know there were a lot of reservations canceled and that included me,” said Brian McCollum, who started the event in 2012. “I canceled my reservation (last) Tuesday, which made me realize I wasn’t the only one.”

McCollum said even though this is the first time Restaurant Week has been extended because of weather, the event was extended during the pandemic while restaurants were at 50% seating capacity to comply with covid-19 regulations. Additional days gave them more time to accommodate people, McCollum said.

After snow on Sunday, this week temperatures have continued to plummet. Tuesday and Wednesday, the high temperature will be 14 degrees.

The theme is “New Dishes for the New Year.” Most Restaurant Week menus are for dine-in only at $45.25 per person. Upgrades are available at some places for an additional cost.

As of early Friday afternoon, more than a dozen of the 50 restaurants participating in the semi-annual event have decided to honor pricing into this week, such as Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse and North Shore Tavern on the North Shore and Monterey Bay Fish Grotto on Mt. Washington.

McCollum said the restaurants participating in the extension will be noted on the website and the dates the establishments will be extending through will also be included.

Some establishments will extend the special pricing to Friday and others into the weekend. For a list of participating restaurants, check here.
