Glidden Paint by PPG's color of the year is 'Limitless'
Glidden Paint by PPG’s color of the year is limitless, both in versatility and in name.
The “anything but yellow” honey beige tone offers “limitless applications,” according to Ashley McCollum, Glidden global color expert.
“Consumers can use Limitless anywhere they’d like a neutral to create an updated, on-trend look, complementary to any design style,” McCollum said. “We are entering a new era of explosive creativity and change. Limitless understands the assignment and embodies this perfectly.”
McCollum said consumers are using color in even more unconventional ways than ever before and they need a palette that offers versatility to work with new and existing décor.
Limitless was selected because of that explosive era of creativity and change where people want to express their personality in whatever way makes them happy, McCollum said.
Betsy Wentz, owner of Betsy Wentz Interior Design in Sewickley, agrees a color such as Limitless can be an accent color or a primary hue.
She said the shade would be great as an exterior paint, especially on a Georgian or traditional style home. Brick would look pretty in this color, too, Wentz said.
“It can make your house stand out more and have a little more curb appeal,” McCollum said. “It can bring energy to commercial spaces and can be a mood booster. It will literally translate everywhere. It is fascinating how industries influence each other.”
It also can be used in a higher shine finish on cabinets in a laundry or mud room, Wentz said. Adding some colorful door knobs to Limitless decorated cabinets creates a fun space. Painting a main hallway in the home is another way to utilize Limitless, Wentz said.
“This color plays well with others,” Wentz said. “It’s a nice shade. Paired with a hue such as plum, that would be very pretty.”
Wentz said home and fashion trends often follow very closely together.
Designer runway looks factor into the decision of color of the year for McCollum and fellow color experts. They make their choice by taking a deep dive into global cultural trends affecting upcoming designs and how do-it-yourselfers can use it in their homes.
McCollum and the team work year round to keep informed on what’s happening — not just about what’s the best color to paint walls in residential and commercial buildings – but several customer segments such as appliances, electronics and even automobiles.
They consider societal influences, demographics and general lifestyle.
“Having this global team allows us to keep a full view on what’s happening across the globe,” McCollum said. “We know that the trend has to represent consumers and what they want and crave in order for it to be sellable. We want to bring the color of the year to life.”
When PPG employees were asked to describe Limitless, they said champagne bubbles, buttered noodles, mellow gold, golden hour, rays of sunlight and pretty pancakes.
Glidden color stylists said you will see this “boujee beige” showing up across exterior and interior commercial and residential spaces, styles and textures.
Limitless pairs equally well with warm and cool tones, Glidden color experts recommend using it anywhere and everywhere “to give space the glow up it deserves.”
Glidden color experts recommend painting unconventional places too, such as abstract or geometric shapes and interior doors.
“Think of Limitless as a fresh and energizing take on a neutral. Limitless can be your main room color or act as an invigorating pop against warm or cool tones,” McCollum said
Warm neutrals are here to stay, replacing cool tones like gray for both do-it-yourself and pro segments in 2024 and beyond, said McCollum.
Along with the color of the year, Glidden also released a 2024 trends palette, consisting of nine hues that can used to refresh a space.
Limitless pairs well with each of them, McCollum said.
Glidden also created a neutral palette of six colors that complement the trend hues.
“This modern neutral is as adaptable as its name implies and is taking the place of cool neutral tones that are so last year,” McCollum said. “With the selection of Limitless, gray is officially cancelled.
“You don’t have to nose dive into this color. Start with painting a side table or incorporate it in different ways depending on what is in your home. It can be introduced in big or small ways, but it will be everywhere.”
