The lotus pond is a highlight of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden.

The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden’s spring lecture and workshop is “Healing Gardens: At the Intersection of Nature and Health” on March 25 and 26.

The lecture and workshop will be held at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden’s Bayer Welcome Center, 799 Pinkerton Run Road, North Fayette. The lecture will be held 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 25 and costs $35 per person. The healing garden workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 26 and is $45 per person. Pittsburgh Botanic Garden members receive a $10 discount on each of the events.

Healing gardens are designed through the arrangement of spaces, placement of paths, selection of materials and plants to help people overcome physical and emotional challenges, according to Beth Exton, spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden.

The lecture will explore the history of healing gardens and current research on its positive impacts on health and wellness.

For the workshop, Amy Wagenfeld will lead participants through activities including a walk through the botanic garden to identify elements found in nature that resonate and lay the groundwork for designing personal healing gardens.

Participants should bring printed photographs of their gardens or a nearby open space to help guide the design process.
