Posbury Clump is the woodland atop the prominent volcanic outcrop in Devon.

You don’t have to be a James Bond villain to own a volcano.

There’s patch of woods sitting atop an ancient volcanic outcrop in England that just might suit your needs. It’ll cost you about $60,000 to join the global ranks of volcano owners.

The property is part of the tiny settlement of Posbury in the rolling hills of the Devon countryside, according to the listing on Jackson-Stops. There’s just a handful of houses and a former convent nearby with the town of Crediton about three miles away.

The wooded site is known as Posbury Clump and extends to about 4.9 acres, of which the majority is designated a Site of Scientific Interest for the unusually hard basalt stone formerly quarried there. Remnants of the historic quarry remain.

The volcano under the woodland is 250 million years old and has long gone extinct, according to Smithsonian Magazine, so the new owner need not fear the intrusion of molten rock. Posbury’s human history dates back to the Iron Age and its prized stone was used in notable buildings in the area.

The 500-foot elevation offers views of the countryside in every direction. There’s a road to access the property.

Don’t assume you’ll be the only volcano owner in the world. Atlas Obscura lays out the history of volcanic ventures.
