Aug. 25 marks the return to the classroom for students in all three Riverview School District buildings, and one of the notable changes this year is an extra-large group of kindergartners at Tenth Street Elementary in Oakmont.

The school will be inviting 70 kindergartners, and according to Principal David Zolkowski, it’s one of the largest incoming groups of youngsters the staff has seen in many years.

“We hope all of our students are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new school year,” he said. “All signs point to another incredible and productive school year. Our skilled and devoted staff is already planning and preparing for our Tenth Street students.

“Our enthusiastic secretary is registering new families, ordering needed materials and updating student files. Our hard-working and conscientious custodians have spent the entire summer thoroughly cleaning the school. And our much-appreciated PTA is gearing up to welcome families, provide volunteer opportunities and offer other exciting events and programs. We are indeed a joyous and caring community with the common goals of nurturing responsible, caring students and promoting high-level learning.”

The Tenth Street PTO will hold its second annual Back to School Food Truck Event from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 23.

“This is a great opportunity for our families and students to meet up with friends and enjoy the last days of summer, and grab some dinner from a food truck. The PTO will be providing free Kona ice for all children.” Zolkowski said.

A Popsicles On the Playground event specifically for the kindergartners will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 24, during which the students can meet, mingle and play with their new classmates.

As Verner Elementary in Verona prepares to start classes, Principal Christina Monroe pointed out that the district has implemented several improvements to the school to help kick off the year.

“We are excited for students to return to school,” she said. “The custodial staff has been working hard to make everything fresh and clean, and Verner has a few new upgrades, including new handicapped-accessible restrooms and a ramp to access the stage in the multipurpose room, as well as some fresh paint. We hope everyone had a great summer and is ready to start a brand new school year.”

At Riverview Junior-Senior High School in Oakmont, Principal Eric Hewitt is looking forward to the community coming out to support the athletic teams that are kicking off the year with home contests.

“The faculty and staff at Riverview hope that our families had a great summer break and are excited to welcome our students back,” he said. “Doors will open at 7:20 a.m., close at 7:37 a.m., and class starts at 7:40. Get here early to take advantage of the grab-and-go or hot breakfast before heading to class! Please come out and cheer on our Raiders at our first events of the new year.”

Those events include the start of football season, with the high school varsity taking on Bethlehem Center at noon Aug. 27.
