Three Girl Scouts from Bethel Park were among the 56 who earned their Gold Awards in the past year. The girls were recognized June 19 at the Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry. The Gold Award is one of the highest achievements in Girl Scouting. According to a news release, while each Gold Award Girl Scout pursues an individual project that aligns with her interests or aspirations, each project provides a sustainable solution to the root cause of an issue, including gaps in community resources, youth education opportunities, environmental conservation and more.

Emily Carter: When she noticed community members leaving food like bread and french fries for birds to eat, Carter set out to educate children in her community on healthy ways to feed and interact with wildlife and plant life. She created an engaging and educational video and accompanying coloring book for kindergarten and first-grade children that focused on choosing healthy foods — for themselves and in nature.

Brianna Hayes: To tackle the ongoing issue of pet abandonment, Hayes created a downloadable activity book that uses engaging activities to educate children on the many responsibilities of owning a pet. She distributed her activity book to local shelters, veterinary offices and national companies.

Allison Kurtz: As a way to introduce science to young children, Kurtz created activity boxes for local preschools. The boxes contained instructions and materials for six varying experiments and activities for the children to hopefully discover a new interest in the sciences.
