People parking in Carnegie can now manage their meters remotely by using an app.

The borough’s council recently approved a contract with Meter Feeder, a tech company based in Braddock.

The app allows people to pay for parking tickets and metered spaces through their smartphones. It is available to download on Android and iPhone devices.

Once downloaded, the app asks users to upload and store license plate numbers and payment information.

“Consequently, when a user’s time is about to expire, the app sends a notification to their phone, alerting and allowing them to add more time remotely,” reads the borough’s press release.

Paying by app is now available to anyone who is parked in a metered space in Carnegie, including the borough’s East Main Street parking lot.

“We want our Main Street business district to grow and thrive, so we need to give patrons more options to pay that are easy and up to date as we become more progressive,” said Steve Beuter, the borough’s manager.

Beuter declined to offer specifics about the borough’s contract with Meter Feeder.

Carnegie’s parking authority officers will use the app’s administrative version, Meter Reader, as an enforcement tool. Any tickets issued will have a QR code at the bottom so the violator can use the app to scan it and pay.

“This simply hasn’t been done before and we’re very excited about improving the user experience,” said Dan Lopretto, Meter Feeder’s chief technology officer.

Carnegie officials said Meter Feeder’s decals and other signage will be added to meters around the borough soon. But the app is available to download now.

The program has also been adopted in Dormont and Brentwood.
