Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh will be closed Thursday after a third person tested positive for covid-19.
The cases appear to be independent of each other and there is no evidence of internal spread of the virus, according to a statement issued by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.
After consulting with the Allegheny County Health Department, Central Catholic administrators have determined that the school will reopen on Friday unless otherwise determined pending contact tracing and test results.
The school is closing Wednesday to allow time for an additional deep cleaning of the campus and for the administration to contact trace and notify those who were in close contact with the person who tested positive.
“The safety of our community is our utmost priority and we are working closely with the (health department) to take the proper steps to keep our students, staff and faculty safe,” said Brother Tony Baginski, principal.
Parents were informed of the the closure and will be updated through the school’s regular communication channels.
The Diocese said the health department has not advised Central Catholic to move to online-only learning.
“This year has presented challenges like no other, and our dedicated faculty, staff and administration are committed to keeping our community safe while providing a top-notch education both in-person and online,” Baginski said. “We are grateful for the flexibility, support and perseverance that our students and parents have shown throughout these difficult times.”
