It won’t be pool season soon enough.

Crawford Pool in Shaler’s Kiwanis park will open on Memorial Day weekend on May 28, closely followed by Etna’s pool on June 4.

Shaler’s pool will start the season unofficially on May 14 with its “Polar Plunge” to anyone who wanted to swim in the pre-season, unheated pool.

“Shockingly, we got a lot of people for this year,” said Tim Rogers, township manager.

New at Shaler this year is an expanded party deck and an additional shelter available for rental for parties.

The party deck can fit about 100 people while the new picnic shelter can accommodate about 50 people. Both facilities give party-goers access to the pool.

“There’s no question rentals are up,” Rogers said. “There’s an increase in demand for facilities because many people would rather hold a pool party here than in their homes.”

Etna’s cool community pool complex that includes a gazebo, deck hockey rink and more will host a flurry of events this summer, according to Mary Ellen Ramage, borough manager.

“In addition to the pool, we are excited to offer activities at our Riverfront Park and the Etna Eco Park,” she said.

The pool will host water aerobics on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for $5 per class to the public and $3 to season pass holders beginning June 7.

Free youth crafts workshops will be held on June 22; July 20 and Aug. 3 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Etna Neighborhood Association will host pickleball Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the deck hockey rink.

Shaler North Hills Library will again present a free reading program every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. beginning June 9.

The pool complex will not offer a concession stand this summer because of a lack of staffing, Ramage said. However, vending machines will be available.

Straying from Etna’s pool, the borough will offer a Riverfront Yoga class on Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m. at the borough’s new Etna Riverfront Park. A $5 donation is suggested. Bring your yoga mat.

“We are excited that community groups and nonprofits give us the capacity to offer these events at the pool and the other new parks,” Ramage said.
