Former Pittsburgh City Councilman Doug Shields on Tuesday announced he will be running again for his former seat.
Corey O’Connor stepped down from City Council on Sunday to take on a new role as Allegheny County Controller. He is replacing Chelsea Wagner, who was elected as an Allegheny County Common Pleas judge.
A special election to fill his seat will be held on November 8, the same day as the general election.
Shields, 68, of Squirrel Hill, was O’Connor’s predecessor, representing council’s District 5 — which includes Squirrel Hill South, Regent Square, Swisshelm Park, Greenfield, Hazelwood, Glen Hazel, Hays, Lincoln Place and New Homestead — from 2004 to 2012.
O’Connor has held the seat since 2012, when he had said that Shields encouraged him to run.
Prior to serving on City Council, Shields served as chief of staff during former Mayor Bob O’Connor’s 12-year tenure on council. The former mayor is Corey O’Connor’s father.
“With attacks on our freedoms and our communities, I see the need for strong leadership in Pittsburgh now more than ever,” Shields said.
Shields said he has devoted himself to issues including equality, gun regulations, reproductive rights and environmental protection.
“He’s ready to once more faithfully serve the people of Council District 5,” said Jay Carter, who is serving as his campaign manager.
Shields is the second candidate to announce a bid for the vacant City Council seat. Barb Warwick, of Greenfield, also launched a campaign and said her top priorities include street safety, public safety and public input on developments in the community.
