Cyclists climb Canton Avenue in Beechview on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021 for the 38th annual Dirty Dozen bicycle ride across 13 of Pittsburgh’s steepest hills.

The 38th annual Dirty Dozen Bicycle Ride was held Saturday, challenging cyclists to take on 13 of the Pittsburgh area’s steepest hills.

The route is about 60 miles. Typically, the ride’s duration is five hours because of the stops and easy pace between the hills.

The ride requires endurance and discipline. A successful hill climb entails continuous uphill progress to the top.

The only contact points with the ground are the two wheels of the bike.

If a cyclist falls down, puts a foot down, grabs a pole or another stationary or moving object, they are disqualified and the hill must be restarted from the bottom, according to the ride’s rules.
