Foxwall EMS will partner with the Salvation Army to house one of its Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) vehicles at the station along Squaw Run Road.

The mobile disaster feeding unit, or canteen, is fully self-contained and able to feed up to 1,000 people at a moment’s notice, Foxwall Commander Josh Worth said.

He’s proud of the partnership, saying Foxwall relies heavily on Salvation Army services to help protect the safety of local firefighters and EMS staff on emergency scenes.

Most recently, the Salvation Army provided assistance at a Feb. 1 structure fire on Sweet Water Lane in Fox Chapel, offering warming shelters and food for six hours.

Founded in 1978, Foxwall serves Aspinwall and Fox Chapel, along with neighboring municipalities.

Michael Riemer, director of Western Pennsylvania’s disaster services, said partnerships like the one with Foxwall enable the canteens to be embedded in communities.

“Having them stationed throughout various parts of Western Pennsylvania allow EDS to have quick response times and the ability to mobilize,” Riemer said.

“Keeping these canteens indoors and out of the elements allow us to have an increased readiness posture and increases the longevity of the vehicle.”
