A free Shred-it event will be April 13 in O’Hara.

Lower Valley residents can take advantage of a free Shred-it event on April 13.

Hosted by Guardian Storage in O’Hara, the event is aimed at helping residents protect themselves from identity theft.

It will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the facility at 1390 Old Freeport Road.

People can dispose of documents that contain private information like bank accounts, social security numbers or credit card statements.

The event is free but participants are asked to donate a school supply to benefit The Education Partnership, a nonprofit that provides help to low-income schools in Western Pennsylvania.

There is a limit of five banker’s boxes of papers to be shredded for each person during the first two hours of the event.

Anyone with more can return during the third hour.

Shredded material will be recycled.
