The 2024 white-tailed deer management report was presented during a combined workshop and regular meeting held on Feb. 11 in O’Hara.

The township collaborates annually with Whitetail Management Associates to help keep the deer population under control.

Participating bow hunters are screened by WMA in bow hunting proficiency, safety, responsibility and knowledge.

Last year, WMA removed 28 deer from the township.

The hunters are limited to specific areas of the township. Neighboring municipalities, such as Fox Chapel, operate similar deer culling programs.

Some of the harvested deer are processed into venison and donated to charities such as the Salvation Army or Jubilee Soup Kitchen.

WMA was created to assist municipalities and governments to deal with deer overpopulation.

According the WMA, each hunter must pass a hunting proficiency test and complete a 12-hour bow hunting safety education class for certification. All participating hunters have several years of deer management and bow hunting experience.
