Free pickleball play kicks off tonight in Aspinwall.
The courts, at the Aspinwall Community Field near Fifth Street, are open from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesdays.
The program will run through Sept. 25 and is open to all.
A paddle sport for all ages and skill levels, pickleball has emerged as a popular passion for people across the country.
In Aspinwall, volunteers last year transformed the park’s basketball court into a multi-use area by painting lines to accommodate pickleball.
The 20-by-44-foot area can be accessed from Field Avenue and sits just below the Highland Park Bridge and Route 28.
The courts were spearheaded by First Street resident Giuseppe Francioni, who proposed the concept to council and then gathered volunteers to paint the lines on the court.
In O’Hara, the Lauri Ann West Community Center offers several pickleball experiences weekly. There are lessons for beginners and outdoor open play at the site, 1220 Powers Run Road.
