Open Streets Sharpsburg anticipates record crowd

Organizers of Open Streets Sharpsburg expect this year’s festival to draw record-setting attendance and have opened North Canal Street to accommodate spillover.
The street fair, set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 1, will occupy Main Street from Sixth to Station streets and will expand to North Canal with some 80-plus vendors and a crowd that last year swelled to 3,000 people.
The free event features food vendors, live music and demonstrations in an effort to showcase the borough’s commercial district.
“I think it’s both special and popular because it’s a great day to show off our businesses, community groups and spirit,” borough council member Karen Pastor said. “It connects everyone and gives everyone a chance to walk and bike and socialize.”
Allegheny County approached Sharpsburg in 2016 to participate in the Open Streets concept, following Bike Pittsburgh’s successful program across the city.
People are invited to enjoy the closed-to-traffic streets filled with food offerings including homemade hot sausage, funnel cakes and cotton candy.
Entertainment will be provided by the Pine Creek Community 70-piece orchestra and the band Jimmy and the Frogmen.
There will be crafts, games, face painting and plenty of activities for young and old. Last year’s event included pony rides, belly dancing and rock climbing.
“My favorite part is standing in the middle of it all and watching everyone enjoy the event,” Pastor said. “It speaks volumes to the hard work of the committee as the event has gotten bigger and better each year.”
