It’s almost that time of year to start thinking about backpacks, school supplies and fresh haircuts.
Volunteers of America and Sharpsburg Family Worship Center hope to ease the expense for families with the annual Operation Backpack, an event where school-aged children can shop for back-to-school needs — all for free.
It will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 13 at 600 Clay St.
There will be giveaways of backpacks, pens, notebooks and other classroom necessities, said Jamie Horne, children’s ministry and outreach director for Sharpsburg Family Worship Center.
There also will be food, games and haircuts for children in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Children must be present to receive free supplies.
The annual back-to-school party is part of both groups’ mission of serving the community, Horne said.
Traditionally, the groups have doled out supplies to nearly 400 children in Fox Chapel Area and Shaler Area school districts each year.
Horne said the event aims to boost self-esteem in children as they head back to class. Choosing a bookbag and getting a new hairstyle works to boost confidence, she said.
Founded in 1999, Sharpsburg Family Worship Center started the giveaways in hopes of reaching out to those most in need.
Donations are being accepted.
