Summer Concert Series returns to South Park, Hartwood Acres
After a year’s absence due to the pandemic, Allegheny County’s popular Summer Concert Series is back with live performances throughout the summer months.
Among the bigger names scheduled to perform are the Indigo Girls, Average White Band, The Spinners, The Jayhawks and The Spin Doctors.
The Friday night South Park Amphitheater Schedule kicks off June 4 with the Pittsburgh Opera performing at 7:30. In addition to the Spinners, other highlights include concerts featuring The Jaggerz, Berlin, and Spyro Gyra. All shows start at 7:30 with the exception of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s performance on July 3 which gets underway at 8:15.
The Sunday night Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater series begins on June 6 with a performance by Truth & Rites and continues through Sept. 5. In addition to the Indigo Girls, Average White Band, Jayhawks and Spin Doctors, the lineup includes River City Brass and The Commonheart.
All shows begin at 7:30 with the exception of the PSO’s performance on July 4 which starts at 8:15 and The Commonheart’s performance on Sept. 5 beginning at 8 p.m. as part of the Annual Allegheny County Musical Festival.
“There are so many things that covid has impacted over the past 14 months,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “Although our Special Events team was able to launch ways to showcase our performers through television and social media, there’s nothing like live music.”
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the county is taking extra precautions for this summer’s shows. Audiences will be asked to remain seated during performances and state CDC guidance will be followed including allowing those who are fully vaccinated to attend without wearing a mask.
There will also be a section at the front of the stage set aside for vaccinated people. Physical distancing among audience members is required and the sites will have additional hand sanitizer dispensers and garbage and recycling stations to limit interaction.
“The Summer Concert Series is one of my favorite things about the summer and I’m thrilled that we can once again host performers and residents for in-person events,” said Fitzgerald. “We have an exciting mix of performers with something for every music lover, no matter their age.”
