A teen-produced video about the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., has earned a Student Emmy nomination for Shady Side Academy.
A team of six students and recent graduates worked on a WSSA-TV news story about gun violence following the 2018 Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, near Miami, that killed 17 people.
The Emmy-nominated team includes seniors George Grune of Fox Chapel, Elle Santora of Renfrew, Jack Naughton of Pine and graduates Jackson Clark of Fort Mill, S.C., Max Farner of Fox Chapel and Ronan O’Connor of Hampton.
James Knox was the staff adviser on the project.
The story covered the March for Our Lives in Downtown Pittsburgh, which was spearheaded by SSA students Erin and Emma Simard.
Coverage also paid tribute to SSA’s participation in the National School Walkout, discourse among Senior School student groups on gun violence and the Academy’s efforts to improve campus security.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences each year recognizes student achievements in production. The SSA story was nominated in the category News: General Assignment.
“It is one of the most competitive categories, and it is an honor to be nominated, especially given that it was SSA’s first Emmy submission and that WSSA-TV had only been in existence for a few months when the story was produced,” said Jen Roupe, director of communications for the school.
There were 17 submissions in the category, with seven nominations. Entries were judged on editorial content and pictures, with standards that included accuracy and fairness.
