Central Elementary School fourth graders unveiled the mosaic in its new permanent home in the Central courtyard on Tuesday, May 7. The mosaic was created in February by fourth graders, with some additional help from students in all grades.

Local mosaic artist Laura Jean McLaughlin worked with the students to design and begin creation of the mosaic. It was part of an Artist in Residency Project that was supported in part by the Arts in Education Partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and was administered by the Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media.

The mosaic will become the centerpiece for a larger renovation of the Central courtyard as it is turned into an outdoor learning experience for all students in the district. As part of the celebration of the mosaic’s unveiling, the National Aviary of Pittsburgh stopped by with some feathered friends to discuss the unique ecosystem depicted in the mosaic.
