Hampton teen headed to 2019 SkillsUSA Championships

A.W. Beattie Career Center will send nine students to the 2019 SkillsUSA Championships, which is part of a student organization that develops leadership skills to complement what students learn in career and technical education programs. The event will be June 24-28 at various locations in Louisville, Ky.
Hampton’s Megan Roth earned first place in advertising design.
Roth, a first-year student at A.W. Beattie, said her passion for artwork has paid off in the career center’s advertising design program. She had three hours to make six sketches and one final logo for a fictitious company in her competition.
“It was a good surprise,” Megan said. “I didn’t see everyone else’s work, so I had no idea how I did. I only saw the girl next to me, and I didn’t know if mine was better. Everyone was cheering. It was amazing to win.”
Out of the 27 A.W. Beattie students who competed at SkillsUSA Pennsylvania, 14 placed in the top three of their competitions.
“These competitions are a lot like our sports,” A.W. Beattie SkillsUSA adviser Heather Brown said. “Instead of competing to be the best softball player or football player, we compete to be the best videographer, the best carpenter, the best graphic designer.”
Students qualified for nationals by competing in SkillsUSA Pennsylvania in April, which took place in Hershey.
