Experts from Tree Pittsburgh helped 23 volunteers plant saplings at the Clarence Fugh Memorial Park and Playground in Etna on March 30.

Trees removed last year from a playground in Etna have been replaced thanks to an effort by community volunteers and experts from Tree Pittsburgh.

Twelve trees were planted at Clarence Fugh Memorial Park and Playground. There were 23 volunteers who turned out to help dig and mulch.

“Here’s to 70-plus years for these new trees,” said Mary Ellen Ramage, Etna borough manager.

Trees had to be removed from the Pine Street playground last year because of infection.

“We all mourned the loss of those trees that shaded, absorbed the stormwater and helped clean the air we breathe,” she said.

The event was the first of a planned yearlong series of tree plantings, Ramage said.
