A Homestead police officer shot a man following a car chase that ended in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood late Saturday, according to Pittsburgh police.

Public safety spokesman Chris Togneri said paramedics took the victim to a hospital. He suffered a gunshot wound to his upper torso and was in stable condition.

Togneri didn’t identify the police officer. A phone message left for Homestead police Sunday morning wasn’t immediately returned.

“We do not identify people unless they have been charged with a crime, and no charges have been filed,” Togneri said.

Togneri said the incident began outside the city and ended in the 3300 block of East Carson Street.

According to Togneri, Homestead police observed a vehicle driving erratically in the borough shortly after 11 p.m. The officers gave chase and pursued the vehicle out of Homestead and into Pittsburgh.

The chase ended when the vehicle being pursued, the Homestead police vehicle and a third vehicle all collided, Togneri said. After the collision, the officer shot the man.

Pittsburgh police will investigate the shooting and interview the Homestead police officer and other involved parties, Togneri said.
