Northern Tier Library activities
• Beer tasting: A beer tasting will showcase the best brews our city has to offer at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10. Participants will take home a commemorative beer glass. Depending on release dates, beers will be featured from Brew Gentlemen, Cinderlands Beer, Dancing Gnome Brewery, Hitchhiker Brewing and Old Thunder Brewing.
Each attendee will enjoy a robust Pittsburgh Charcuterie board along with six different beers. Final choices will be determined by release dates, but will be chosen from the following: Light Style Pilsner, Lager, Hop Forward (IPA or double IPA), Hefeweizen, Porter or Cream Ale.
Bring a dozen of your favorite cookies, and we will create a Pittsburgh cookie table to enjoy with our last beer sample. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased on the library’s website or at the library. Reservations will be taken until Sept. 3.
• Plants for sale: This September, the library will celebrate its fifth annual Love Your Library campaign. All donations made to the Northern Tier Library during September will receive a prorated match from the Buncher Foundation. As one of its fundraisers, the library will offer a selection of high quality plants for sale. Choose from an 8-inch pot of mums (six colors available) for $6, a 6-inch pot of kale (purple or white) for $5 or a 12-inch bowl of pansies for $15. The deadline to order is Sept. 10.
• Fresh air storytime: Enjoy some toys and games before the start of a family storytime for children every Wednesday and Thursday morning. The program is an outdoor event on the library’s side lawn, weather permitting. Families should bring a blanket or camping chair and a rattle or noise-making toy to play along with the music. Because this is a children’s program, masks will be required when around others.
Sessions will be Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. from Sept. 15 through Oct. 20 or Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. from Sept. 16 through Oct. 21.
• Take-home crafts: Children are invited to enjoy a simple, weekly take-home craft. The program will begin its fall session the week of Sept. 13. Call or register online to reserve a weekly supply kit that can be picked up every Monday inside the library lobby and enjoyed at home. This program is for children of all ages, and registration is required.
• Back to school craft fest: Work on creating pins, magnets, pencil cases and other crafts, Sept. 9 from 5 to 6 p.m., that will bring originality to your school supplies. The program is for school-aged children and their families. Registration is required.
• Engineering workshop: Students in grades 5-8 can explore aspects of ancient Roman architecture through hands-on activities in an engineering workshop Aug. 26 from 3 to 5 p.m. The workshop will be taught by Pine-Richland high school student, Elizabeth Shaffer. Registration is required by Aug. 19. The program will be limited to 20 participants. To register, email: shaffere553@gmail.com.
• College — getting there from here: Whether your children or grandchildren are learning to crawl or drive, you can help make college education a reality. Join Richard Olszewski from Edward Jones for an in-person presentation Sept. 1 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss establishing a college savings goal, savings strategies to help you reach your goal and the benefits of various education savings plans. Registration is required.
• Fall used-book sale: The library will be holding a small used-book sale during September. Visit the library to take a look at what is offered. All book sale proceeds boost the library’s Love Your Library donation total.
