Polar Plunge

Come to Crawford Pool on May 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. for the first Polar Plunge.

A $3 donation will be collected at the door to benefit the Shaler Area Backpack Initiative. Participants will receive a free hot drink of their choice (hot chocolate, coffee or tea).

Dinners to-go

Heavenly Cuisine Custom Catering is giving out to-go dinner plates on April 16 from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Glenshaw Valley Presbyterian Church, 1520 Butler Plank Road.

Meals are $15 and are payable by cash only at time of pickup.

Order by calling 412-487-7194 or email glenshawcenturyclubinc@gmail.com by noon April 14 to secure a plate.

Include your name, phone number, pickup time and number of meals.

Plates include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, coleslaw and chocolate cake.

Proceeds benefit the Glenshaw Century Club, Inc. and scholarship grants for Shaler Area High School seniors.

Genealogists to meet

The North Hills Genealogists group will present “A Spring Round-Table,” a dialogue among members and online viewers inviting participants to share experiences and questions about exploring their family histories. The free event will take place April 19 at 6:45 p.m.

Drive-thru spaghetti dinner

The Elfinwild Lions Club is holding a drive-thru, free-will-offering spaghetti dinner at Elfinwild Presbyterian Church on Mt. Royal Boulevard on April 17 from 3 to 6 p.m.

The dinner includes salad, spaghetti (choice of sausage, beef or veggie sauce), breadstick and dessert.

Yoga sessions

Yoga sessions will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. every Saturday in Kiwanis Park starting May 1. Days and times are subject to change dependent on weather.

Online kindergarten registration open

Shaler Area School District is accepting online registrations for students entering kindergarten in fall 2021. Registration will run through April 30.

Students are eligible to attend kindergarten if they will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31.

Garden events go virtual

The Carnegie Science Center is teaming up with North Hills Community Outreach to broadcast three Facebook Live events that will explore the science behind gardening and healthy eating.

The following virtual events will be hosted on Carnegie Science Center’s Facebook page and will be available on the Science Center’s YouTube channel following the livestream:

• Harvesting Lettuce and Making a Salad, April 21 at 11 a.m.: Learn how to seed, grow and harvest lettuce to make a delicious and nutritious salad.

• Apiaries and Bees, May 19 at 11 a.m.: Take a virtual tour of North Hills Community Outreach’s apiary and learn about the relationship between bees and plants.

These Facebook Live events are part of Carnegie Science Center’s Lettuce Grow Together! program, sponsored by GrowingGreat and Del Monte Foods. Learn more at carnegiesciencecenter.org.

Shaler plant sale

Shake off your quarantine blues by heading to Shaler Garden Club’s 67th annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon May 1 at Kiwanis Park on Wetzel Road, Glenshaw. Hardy perennials from members’ gardens will be offered at bargain prices, along with herbs, vegetables, houseplants, potted arrangements and bulbs.

A basket auction will add to the festivities. Proceeds benefit community projects and philanthropic donations of the Shaler Garden Club.

For public safety, all patrons and volunteers will be required to wear face masks and practice social distancing.

Book sale by appointment

The Friends of Shaler North Hills Library book sale runs through April 17 by appointment only. Each appointment is 90 minutes.

Children’s books will not be sold but there are youth-focused DVDs and games and puzzles.

The shelves will be restocked as donations come in. This is a fundraiser for the Shaler North Hills Library.

Prices are $1 for hardback books and DVDs, 50 cents for small paperbacks, $1.25 for video games and $2 for games and puzzles.

Nonperishable items needed for food drive

Donations of nonperishable food items for the Shaler Area Backpack Initiative are accepted from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 66 Grant Ave.
