Iron City Beer ad removed from billboard atop Mount Washington
The Iron City Beer advertisement on Mount Washington no longer hovers over Pittsburgh.
The sign — visible from many points throughout the city, including Point State Park — was taken down Monday.
According to Pittsburgh Brewing Company, Iron City Beer used the prominent billboard from 1938 till the mid-1950s. The sign at times included neon lights, a clock and beer glasses.
The Lamar-managed advertising space was later occupied by advertisements for Alcoa, Bayer, Sprint and the National Flag Foundation before Iron City Beer returned to the hilltop location in 2020.
Pittsburgh Brewing Co. marketing coordinator Rachel Semelbauer in 2023 told TribLive that the Iron City billboard has “resonated with the Pittsburgh demographic.”
“Iron City is Pittsburgh, and I think that’s why people like it, are proud of it, and have become attached to it,” Semelbauer said at the time.
Iron City Beer took control of the billboard again last year after its sister brand, I.C. Light, enjoyed a seven-month stint overlooking the city from the Mt. Washington site.
The sign taking Iron City’s place shows an ad for law firm Pond Lehocky.
