A popular bar in Pittsburgh’s Strip District was ordered to close for at least a week by the Allegheny County Health Department after officials said it failed to comply with covid-19 health restrictions.

An inspection report for Lefty’s In the Strip from Friday listed several violations to county health mandates. The posted covid-19 capacity for the bar is 22 people, but the inspector recorded 33 people during his visit. Twelve people were observed in the outdoor dining area, though the space designated is only to accommodate seven.

The inspection report also recorded an “observed failure of the facility to enforce physical distancing” and many patrons consuming alcohol after completing their meals. The report said a bartender stated those patrons were waiting for meals, but was unable to provide proof.

An owner or manager at Lefty’s could not be reached for comment on Monday.

The health department launched the Covid Field Response Team in late July to inspect bars and restaurants as they implemented capacity restrictions and mask requirements. Health officials have said overall, more than 80% of establishments visited by the team have been compliant.

Lefty’s was ordered to close for at least seven days, and must submit a covid-19 Prevention Plan before being allowed to reopen.
