A Pittsburgh man will serve 15 to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting a city police officer two years ago in Mount Oliver.
Julian Reese-Krasausky, 23, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer on Thursday before Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Randal B. Todd.
The negotiated agreement called for the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office to waive a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 to 40 years.
“He’s young enough to turn his life around,” said defense attorney Ryan Tutera.
According to Deputy District Attorney Ilan Zur, Reese-Krasausky was escorted out of the Lobby, an afterhours club at 300 Brownsville Road, by security about 5 a.m. on June 25, 2022.
The person working security took Reese-Krasausky down the street and into an alley. There, the security guard shot Reese-Krasauky in the shoulder, Zur said.
Reese-Krasausky then went to the car he arrived in, got his gun, returned to the club and fired nine times inside the establishment.
He struck one 25-year-old woman in the leg and the 57-year-old cook in the buttocks, Zur said.
Pittsburgh police officers called to the scene spotted Reese-Krasausky walking down Ibis Way toward Matthews Street and chased him.
Officer Benjamin Gery spotted the suspect in the window well of the Pittsburgh Christian Fellowship Church and yelled for Reese-Krasausky to show his hands.
Instead, the suspect fired a shot at Gery from 5 feet away, Zur said striking him in the chest and knocking him back.
“Officer Gery was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time,” Zur said. “If it were not for the vest stopping the bullet, Officer Gery would have most certainly suffered serious bodily injury at a minimum, if not worse, as the bullet would have penetrated vital organs.”
Reese-Krasausky, who also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for shooting the bystanders in the club, apologized in court, saying that he’d been drinking heavily that night.
“He had no idea it was a police officer,” Tutera said. “It was split second. As he was saying ’stop, police,’ he fired.”
“Luckily, the officer wasn’t seriously injured.”
