A Washington County man accused by police of driving a Maserati to deliver cocaine around the region, will serve 12½ years in federal prison.

Dirk Barfield Jr., 38, was still on supervised released from a 2009 federal case when he was arrested on the new charges.

According to federal prosecutors, Barfield was the subject of a joint FBI and Pennsylvania State Police investigation in September 2022.

That investigation showed that Barfield traveled from a residence in Pittsburgh in his Maserati, a luxury Italian car, to distribute cocaine.

When law enforcement arrived to search that residence on Sept. 13, 2022, they said, Barfield threw baggies containing two ounces of cocaine and one ounce of crack from a second-floor window.

He pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to deliver cocaine on Sept. 18 before U.S. District Judge Robert Colville and was sentenced on Tuesday.

Barfield had previously served 11 years in federal prison.

His defense attorney, Komron Jon Maknoon, said his client entered the federal prison system at age 23 in 2009.

At that time, Barfield was sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison for possessing 7 grams of crack cocaine. Maknoon said severe laws at the time treated an amount of crack as the equivalent of 100 times more than powder cocaine.

Barfield was released from federal custody in the summer of 2020.

“Upon his release during the height of the covid-19 pandemic, the extraordinary challenges of reintegration derailed his plans to secure stable work and contribute as a productive member of society,” Maknoon said.

In August 2021, Barfield was charged with driving over a trooper’s foot and striking a pedestrian with his car on the South Side.

Police said Barfield was driving an Audi A5 when he was stopped at 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 14 at South 17th Street and Carey Way for a traffic violation.

State police said he fled, running over a trooper’s foot, and then struck a pedestrian a few blocks away.

He was charged with fleeing, reckless endangerment and related counts. A charge of aggravated assault was withdrawn.

Trial in that case is scheduled in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court on Feb. 19.
