Despite Gov. Tom Wolf’s order that schools close for the remainder of the academic year, events planned for Gateway’s high school seniors will likely still occur.

They just might be on different days, depending on how the coronavirus affects stay-at-home orders, said Mary Beth Cirucci, school board president.

Graduation is still scheduled for May 27 at Antimarino Stadium.

“We feel that these milestones are very important for our children … so we’re going to do our best to ensure that we meet the obligation of having a graduation ceremony,” said Superintendent Bill Short during a virtual meeting held April 14.

But prom could be rescheduled for a yet-to-be-announced date in June. And the high school’s senior celebration, “Gator Gala,” could likely be pushed to a date in July. Both those events would be held at Edgewood Country Club in Churchill.

The latest high school cancellation included the scrapping of its musical production, which came a day following Wolf’s order.

Other events, like trips to Kennywood for elementary and middle school students, have not been canceled, according to the district’s website.

Cirucci said finalized details will be announced in the coming weeks through a district letter to parents.

Gateway’s last day of school for students is June 1. The last day for high school classes is May 29.
