Origami workshops
The Monroeville Public Library will host a series of origami workshops beginning March 20 with instructor Madonna Yoder.
Sessions will be March 20, April 3 and April 17 at the library, 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd. Yoder will focus on concepts such as creating tessellating patterns and corrugations in fabric using a crafting technique called Canadian smocking. Register at Monroeville.librarycalendar.com.

Free community Easter dinner
Christ the Divine Shepherd Church will host a free Easter dinner from 12:30-3 p.m. March 31 at the church, 245 Azalea Drive in Monroeville.
Open house at Weiger Religious School
Temple David’s Weiger Religious School will host an open house at 9 a.m. April 7.

Symphony East musicians set to perform
Symphony East will kick off its 62nd season March 18 with four musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Violinists Regi Papa, violist Marylene Gingras-Roy and cellist Mikhail Istomin will perform at 1 p.m. A $10 donation is requested for adults who attend.
It will take place at the Lamplighter, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem.

Bird conservation speaker at AAUW meeting
The Murrysville chapter of the American Association of University Women will welcome the Carnegie Museum’s Urban Bird Conservation Coordinator Jonathon Rice as the featured speaker for its March 14 meeting.
It will be at 10 a.m. in the Murrysville Community Library’s TechNook, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.
Rice helped construct a network of more than 150 automated radio tracking stations designed to detect coded tags affixed to migratory birds, bats and insects.
The public is invited to attend; registration is not required.

Car show benefit set for April
The Steel City Chapter of the Heavy Hitters Car Club will host an April 21 car show at the Boyce Park Wave Pool.
It will be from noon to 5 p.m. at 740 Old Frankstown Road in Plum, with special guest host and former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Louis Lipps.
The entry fee is $10 and the event will include food, music, a 50-50 and basket raffles along with awards in seven categories.
Proceeds will benefit Tiny Cause, a nonprofit dog rescue shelter in Vandergrift. For more, see SCheavyhitters.com.
Light bulb sales support police
Monroeville officials are selling blue light bulbs and proceeds will benefit the Monroeville Police Benevolent Fund.
The Blue Light Project will offer the bulbs for $10 at the Monroeville Parks and Recreation Department at 2700 Monroeville Blvd. Community members can also purchase and install their own blue 9-watt LED bulb to show support for the police.

Kindergarten registration open
Gateway School District officials announced that kindergarten registration for the 2024-25 school year is open.
Parents can go to Gatewayk12.org/ resources/parent-resources/registration to complete an online enrollment form. Kindergarten screenings will take place in May.

Divine Mercy school, Divine Shepherd church events planned
Divine Mercy Academy School and Christ the Divine Shepherd Church, 245 Azalea Drive, Monroeville, are planning these events:
• To kick off St. Patrick’s Day week, the school will be hosting an Irish pub trivia night at 7 p.m. on March 9 in the dining hall. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Trivia teams can range from one to eight players. The school can combine individuals or small groups with others to form full teams. Trivia questions will include categories such as history and pop culture, but knowledge of the Emerald Isle will prove handy.
The age 21 and older event is open to the public. Prizes include gift cards and a chance to win up to $500 in cash. Snacks, pizza, nonalcoholic beverages and two drink tickets are included in the price of a ticket.

• Stations of the Cross are held at the church every Friday at 2 p.m. during lent. At 7 p.m. on March 22, seventh graders from the school will be offering “silhouette stations,” at which time they will pose behind white fabric to demonstrate each station.

Plum AARP to meet March 12
The Plum AARP will hold its monthly meeting at noon March 12 in Unity Community Church.
Hot dogs with condiments and chips will be provided for $2; cake, coffee and tea are free. The program will be Ron Soltis, singing and playing the keyboard. Members also can purchase tickets to the May luncheon, which will be held May 14 at Jaden’s II.
The Plum AARP is a social/service group featuring informative speakers or entertainment at each meeting. The group also plans a May luncheon, a summer social and a Christmas party each year, as well as opportunities to sign up for day or overnight trips through Thomas Tours and Travel or Louise Grassi Tours.
Regular meetings are held at noon on the second Tuesday of each month in Unity Community Church. The group meets September through August (except June) and is open to men and women from Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and surrounding areas.

The Monroeville Public Library will host the following programs:
• March 9: Death Cafe discussion group meets at 1:30 p.m. regarding all things death and dying. Attendees are asked to arrive around 1 p.m.
• March 11: Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club meets at 7 p.m. to discuss Isaac Asimov’s three laws of robotics and his book, “I, Robot.” Register at Monroeville.librarycalendar.com.
• March 12: “Before Their Time: Black Female Leaders” will take place at 7 p.m. with Anthony Mitchell, who will highlight lesser-known but crucial Black female historical figures.
