Feeling cooped up?
Here is a list of activities sponsored by the Monroeville Recreation and Parks Department going on through the cold, winter months to get you up and moving.
Swimming
Starting Jan. 11, there will be different programs available for people aged 6 months to adults at Gateway High School’s pool.
Six-week courses typically run for 30 minutes during weekly sessions and costs start at $45. The high school’s pool will also be open from 2 to 3 p.m. every Saturday starting Jan. 11 for open swim. Children aged three to 17 are $5 and adults are $6. Seniors over 65 cost $5 and a family cost $13.
Fly tying
Those seeking to learn basic fly tying skills can sign up for the six-week course starting Jan. 16. It runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Cleveland Steward Elementary’s all-purpose room. The course costs $30 and a $40 one-time fee is due at the first class to cover needed fly tying supplies.
Exercise classes
There are options for those wanting to try Zumba, dance, boxing, kick boxing and yoga. The classes are available in four- to six-week courses that start in January and February at either Alba Fitness, Alliance Athletics in Wall or the Monroeville Senior Citizens Center.
The classes cost anywhere from $30 to $60.
Sports
Volleyball will be available for 10 weeks at Gateway Middle School’s gym from 7 to 10 p.m. every Tuesday starting Jan. 7. Courts will be open to anyone over age 15. Playing costs $5 each week.
The Monroeville Girls Softball League will offer a fast-pitch league for girls aged 7 to 18 starting in mid-April. Registration opens Feb. 3.
Arts and crafts
There are numerous opportunities to make some crafts, from Ukrainian egg decorating to making your own bullet journaling chart to designing a “funky flower” travel mug. Depending on the craft, costs range from $10 to $43.
