Man accused of theft, pulling knife at Pittsburgh Target

A Pittsburgh man was charged with stealing items and threatening an employee with a knife Saturday night at a Target store on Penn Avenue in the city.

Called to the store shortly after 11 p.m., city police say Brandon George, 41, fled on foot after threatening to shoot employees and then pulling a pocket knife on a female security worker. No one was injured, police said.

According to a criminal complaint filed by police, the incident began when the security staffer approached George, believing he was attempting to steal a beanie cap that he was wearing on his head and that had store tags attached to it.

The staffer told police that George said, “If you do that funny (expletive) again, I’m going to shoot you,” and tossed crumpled cash at a checkout register. George pulled out a pocket knife and advanced toward her throat with the blade, but stopped and left the store, according to the complaint.

Based on a description provided by the store staff, police said they quickly found George nearby, under a pedestrian bridge at Shady and Ellsworth avenues. Police said they took George into custody, Tasing him when he ignored their commands to stop and began to walk toward people at a nearby bus stop.

George was in possession of a stolen coffee mug and USB charging cable that were returned to the store, police said.

After he was medically cleared, George was arraigned on charges of robbery, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Allegheny County Jail after failing to post $10,000 bail.
