5 juveniles arrested amid South Side assault

Pittsburgh police said they responded Saturday to reports that an adult man was assaulted by a group of teenagers who tried to rob him of his backpack.

The man was walking in the area of 73 E. Carson St. in the city’s South Side neighborhood near the American Natural gas station, according to police.

The suspects — who police identified as juvenile males — fled the area on foot. Police apprehended them a short time later.

The victim was injured and treated by medics, public safety officials said. One of the juveniles received a serious injury to his eye when the victim defended himself, officials said, and he was taken to the hospital.

Police said they have arrested five people between the ages of 13 and 15. They each face charges of robbery, conspiracy and aggravated assault.

Water main break closes Strip District street

A portion of 28th Street in Pittsburgh’s Strip District was shut down Saturday night after a large water main break.

The break between Penn Avenue and Spring Way occurred around 11:15 p.m., according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority told the station that two customers were impacted.

Crews were not expected to be able to make full repairs until Monday, and the road will remain closed while repairs are finished, WTAE reported.

New Pittsburgh infrastructure commission to hold 1st meeting

A newly formed Pittsburgh commission dedicated to the city’s infrastructure is expected to meet for the first time this week, more than a year after the commission was formally created.

The Commission on Infrastructure Asset Reporting and Investment is slated to hold its inaugural meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the City-County Building in Downtown, officials said.

The commission is expected to select officers, create working groups and review a bridge summary report.

Legislation approved by City Council in the wake of the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse created the commission, which is tasked with making recommendations on long- and short-term investments in city-maintained bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure assets.

It took more than a year for Mayor Ed Gainey’s administration to name the board’s first appointments.

Police warn Kia, Hyundai owners about potential theft

McKees Rocks police warned residents this weekend that Kia and Hyundai owners should protect their vehicles with steering wheel locks.

The locks, police said, can deter potential thieves who have been targeting such vehicles.

The department posted images on social media of a vehicle that was “amongst countless others” that was recovered in McKees Rocks. Its passenger-side window was broken, and the steering column was “mutilated,” police said.

Police earlier this month said Kia vehicles from 2010 and newer and Hyundai vehicles from 2015 and newer “are being stolen at an alarming rate in and around town.”

On a daily basis, McKees Rocks police say they have been taking multiple reports and recovering multiple vehicles from other jurisdictions.

Thieves are stealing the cars “using a common USB cable,” police said.

Police urged people who own these types of cars to get a steering wheel security device to “hopefully deter thieves from shattering the window in attempts of stealing the car in the first place.”

5 hospitalized after Washington County crash

Five people were hospitalized Sunday after a crash on Interstate 79 in Amwell Township, Washington County.

Two children and three adults were transported to local trauma and pediatric hospitals, according to Ambulance & Chair EMS.

The EMS service responded to the wreck, which had temporarily closed the highway, with four advanced life-support ambulances. UPMC Prehospital Care, STAT MedEvac and LifeFlight also responded, along with fire and police personnel.

Additional details about the extent of the victims’ injuries were not immediately available.
