Delmont library reschedules butterfly release party

A monarch butterfly collects nectar from a flower. Butterflies are one of nature’s many pollinators for flowers and crops, and Delmont Public Library officials have built a butterfly garden just outside the library where they host an annual release party.

You can schedule a butterfly release party for July 29. But if the butterflies don’t cooperate, not much can be done.

In fact, the ones at the Delmont Public Library aren’t even butterflies yet — they’re still caterpillars, transitioning to the next phase of their lives — which is why Monday night’s release was rescheduled for Aug. 4.

“We have about five that have hatched, and we have a bunch of beautiful chrysalises hanging in the enclosure,” library volunteer Chris Clark said.

The Aug. 4 release party will be at 5 p.m. at the library, 77 Greensburg St., Delmont. Children and adults will have a chance to interact with butterflies inside a large tent before they are released into the library’s butterfly garden.
