Delmont paving program to begin 'within two to three weeks'

Delmont residents are likely to see road crews in the borough “within two to three weeks” to start the borough’s 2019 paving program, engineer Kevin Brett said at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Borough officials secured a loan of about $292,000 for paving work on West Pittsburgh Street, Stotler Drive and Cupp Way.

Work on Stotler will also include some storm water drainage work beneath the street.

Brett added that the contractor, Monessen-based El Grande Industries, is aiming to complete the work before the annual Apples’n Arts Festival, set for Oct. 5 and 6 at the Shields Farm in Delmont.

“We’re working with them to ensure that if the work is not complete before Apples’n Arts, it will be finished after the festival is over,” Brett said. “We don’t want to have that work going on during the festival.”

In other borough business:

• Council accepted the resignation of Councilwoman Ann Lantz, who is stepping down for medical reasons, according to her resignation letter to the borough.

Council appointed Republican council candidate Dennis Urban, the top vote-getter in this spring’s primary election, to serve the remainder of Lantz’s term, which is up at the end of the year.

Urban will take the oath of office at council’s September meeting.

• Mayor Alyce Urban announced that in place of the annual Delmont Daze celebration, this year Delmont Christmas Pilgrimage officials will host a sock hop to raise money for this year’s pilgrimage.

It will be 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Rose Wigfield Parklet, 27 Greensburg St., Delmont, and will feature vintage cars, door prizes, food, adult beverages, a Chinese auction, 50-50 raffle and live music.
