Classes may not be meeting in person and buildings may be closed, but there is still plenty happening in and around the Franklin Regional School District:
• The district earned a “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its commitment to music education. Now in its 21st year, the designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
It is the second year in a row the district earned the award.
“Music education, in particular, helps children develop cognitive learning and social skills while helping them become well-rounded adults,” Superintendent Gennaro Piraino said. “Earning this award for two consecutive years demonstrates the positive and lasting impact that our music program is having not only on our students but on the communities we serve.”
• River T. Sell of Murrysville was awarded the National Merit Mary E. Beyerle Scholarship, announced as part of the first round of the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
Sell is among a group of 1,000 high-school seniors to earn corporate-sponsored scholarships.
• Kindergarten registration is open for the 2020-21 school year. Blank packets are available on the district’s website. Families may also contact Ms. Ericka Cowell at ecowell@frsdk12.org if they wish a packet mailed to their home.
• The Franklin Regional Panthers Athletics page is recognizing members of its senior class who have lost out on their final seasons of high-school sports.
“We were looking for a way to recognize our senior student-athletes for the spring sports season,” Athletics Director Zach Kessler said. “It seems to be taking root in high school athletics as now many other schools are using this concept.”
The “Senior Spotlight” features a few details about each athlete, along with their accomplishments and future plans. See FRpanthers.org for more.
• The district last week made tentative re-scheduling plans for prom and graduation.
