The Franklin Regional Junior Olympics wrestling team brought home a first-place finish at the annual Kiski Youth Duals, going 5-0 at the Dec. 21 meet.
Team recruitment coordinator Mike Ruane said the team is still getting its bearings early in the season.
“This was only our second dual of the year,” Ruane said. “We struggled and didn’t place in our first one at North Allegheny on Dec. 15.”
Ruane said the team lost some of its key starters from last year, “but after tweaking our lineup a bit and another week of practice, we drastically improved and won at Kiski.”
And while Ruane certainly wanted team members to try to eat healthy over the holiday break, “we really don’t talk weight too much at this age,” he said. “Only to eat responsibly when it comes to a dual week.”
Ruane said it’s “amazing how disciplined most of these children are. They know what weight they are most effective at and will pretty much maintain on their own throughout the season.”
