Franklin Regional school board officials are expected to award bids Monday night for a project that will see the renovation of Sloan Elementary School and the construction of a second elementary building on the Sloan property, off Sardis Road in Murrysville.

Bids were opened on Feb. 12 for the project, which school district officials estimated will cost about $54 million.

Despite being approved in October by Murrysville council, the project is the subject of legal action: a group of private residents, the Sloan Project Concerned Citizens, have appealed council’s approval, arguing that officials did not set appropriate conditions to protect the health, welfare and safety of the community.

The school district has also intervened in the appeal. Its position is that Murrysville officials went too far and overstepped their authority in imposing some of the conditions required for approval.

A court date for the appeal has not been set. The school board will meet at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 18, in the Murrysville municipal building at 4100 Sardis Road. Meetings are also broadcast live on Comcast local acces Channel 19.
