As parents of school-age children scrambled to figure out how to handle two weeks of closed schools, administrators are trying to determine how to handle instruction in the near future.

“At this time, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and schools across Pennsylvania are working through many legal and procedural barriers regarding distance learning,” Franklin Regional officials wrote Monday in a letter to parents. “As more information becomes available, we will communicate with you and share information with you.”

District officials said their goal is to provide parents by the end of the day Tuesday with resources to help students at home with “skills practice and voluntary learning opportunities on our website.”

“This 10-day pause in education is essential for a greater community need, but we as a school system recognize the ways we need to support our students,” Superintendent Gennaro Piraino said Friday after Gov. Tom Wolf ordered all schools closed for two weeks. “We’ll be working on a long-term plan and implementing it. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Parents of students who left essential items like glasses, identification, a musical instrument, an essential technology device, etc., at school can email their designated building contact to arrange to retrieve those items.

Students do not need to pick up any instructional materials or worry about school work, according to district officials.

“… ONLY those who need essential items will be permitted in the buildings,” the letter reads.

The district is “working through how we may continue meal service specifically for students who receive free or reduced lunches,” according to the letter.
