Halloween Hustle 5K proposes shift from Murrysville to Export
This year’s Halloween Hustle 5K will move from Murrysville to Export.
The race is hosted by the East Suburban Trailblazers, an inclusive running club associated with East Suburban Citizen Advocacy.
“We’d like to have this year’s 5K on the (Westmoreland) Heritage Trail,” said Trailblazers member Megan Nelson. “Usually, we’ve held it at Murrysville Community Park, but, as you know, October is soccer season and it’s very dangerous on Wiestertown Road.”
Using the trail would require permission from the Regional Trail Corporation as well as county officials, Export solicitor Wes Long said.
Nelson said she had spoken with trail and county officials about the proposed Oct. 19 race, and was awaiting a vote from the county’s board of commissioners.
“We’ll run from the (caboose in Export) just past the Cozy Inn Cutoff, turn around and come back,” Nelson said, adding that the group will have someone posted at the trail’s Van Buren Street crossing in Murrysville for safety purposes.
Presuming county support, Long recommended adding the borough to the Trailblazers’ insurance documents.
Borough council voted 5-0 to support bringing the race to Export. Council members Melanie Litz and James Mahinske were not present.
