Franklin Regional fined for chemical discharge

The Franklin Regional School District recently paid a $7,000 fine to the state’s Department of Environmental Protection, after mop water containing floor finish and floor-finish stripper was poured down a janitorial sink connected to the stormwater system rather than the sanitary sewer.

The discharge, which took place July 28, 2021, caused water to turn a bluish-white color in a stormwater channel that ultimately drains to Turtle Creek.

Franklin Regional officials hired an environmental contractor who removed roughly 7,000 gallons of impacted stormwater from the channel, and the janitorial sink was reconnected properly to sewage pipes, along with two bathroom sink drains.
