Garden club plant sale set for May 5 in Murrysville

The Murrysville Garden Club will host its annual plant sale from noon until sellout May 5 at the Murrysville VFC No. 1 pavilion, 3235 Sardis Road, Murrysville. The club will be selling annual and perennial flowers, hanging baskets, patio pots and gardening items.

Proceeds will benefit the club’s scholarship program.

The club meets at 10:30 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month, March through November, at Christ’s Lutheran Church, 5330 Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville.

AMVETS blood drive set for April 16

The White Valley AMVETS Post 85 will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 16 at the post, 2100 Carolina St.in Murrysville. Appointments are recommended by calling 412-209-7000, but walk-ins are welcome.

‘We Are FR’ scholarship accepting applications

The “We are FR” scholarship fund is accepting applications for 2022 scholarships.

Created through the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, a component of the Pittsburgh Foundation, the scholarships average $1,500 and are available to Franklin Regional seniors demonstrating financial need who have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.5, plan to attend a two- or four-year college, and demonstrate a commitment to the community.

Upcoming events at Delmont Library

• The Friends of the Delmont Library will host a spring tea from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23 at St. John Baptist de La Salle Church in Delmont.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the library, 75 School St.

The church is at 497 Athena Drive.

• The library will have a craft booth for children at the Easter Egg Hunt at noon April 16 at Newhouse Park, off of Stotler Drive.

• The Delmont Diggers group will be preparing its landscape and garden areas for planting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 30 at the library. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes and gloves for pulling weeds.

• The library will be closed April 16 and 18 for the Easter holiday.

‘Musical World of Disney’ concerts planned

The Masterworks Concert Chorale will present “The Musical World of Disney” at two concerts: 7 p.m. April 30 at Level Green Presbyterian Church, and 2 p.m. May 1 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Murrysville.

The chorale will present songs from Disney classics including “Frozen,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid” and more.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and free for children ages 10 and under.

Level Green Presbyterian is at 105 Olive St. in Trafford, and Calvary Lutheran is at 4725 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Former investigator discusses true crime stories

The Murrysville Lions Club and Murrysville Recreation Department will welcome guest speaker Dave Grace to an April 28 presentation.

Grace is a former U.S. Justice Department, Treasury and State Department investigator, working primarily on bomb investigations. His experience on cases includes the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the Unabomber case, the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Park bombing and more. He has also provided technical advice on TV and film productions.

The presntation will be at 7 p.m. April 28 at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Ave. There is no cost to attend, and light refreshments will be available.

Litter cleanup in Delmont

The Delmont Visionary Committee will host an April 30 litter cleanup event in the borough.

Volunteers will meet at the Rose Wigfield Parklet, 27 Greensburg St., at 9 a.m. to receive supplies and instructions, and will meet back at the park for a free lunch. Participants will receive a free T-shirt.

Bio-ethics expert featured at AAUW meeting

Lisa Parker, director for the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Bioethics and Health Law, will be the featured speaker at the April 14 meeting of the American Association of University Women’s Murrysville chapter.

Parker will discuss research ethics and the “All of Us Research Program,” an effort to gather health data from a million people across the U.S.

The meeting will be at 10 a.m. April 14 at the Murrysville Community Library’s Tech Noook.

Symphony East will host ‘Hats Off to Spring’ fundraiser

Symphony East will host a musical tea party, “Hats Off to Spring,” at 11:30 a.m., April 25 at the Lamplighter in Salem.

Live entertainment will be provided by the Franklin Regional string and saxophone quartets, and attendees will also explore the “History of Hats” with presenter Jean Kanouff.

Municipal cleanup week begins April 25

Murrysville Cleanup Week will take place April 25-30. Residents can receive permit passes to take items to the Valley Landfill, 6015 Pleasant Valley Road, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the week, and from 7-11 a.m. April 30.

Permit passes will be available through April 29 at the reception desk in the Murrysville municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road.

Speaker will discuss hospice vs. palliative care

The “Boomers and Beyond” speaker series at Mother of Sorrows parish in Murrysville will welcome speaker Cheryl Aughton, marketing director at Concordia Lutheran Ministries, to its April 19 session.

Aughton will discuss the differences between hospice and palliative care and the different types of assisted living, skilled nursing and continuing care communities that are available in the region.

The presentation will be at 11:30 a.m. April 19 at the church’s social hall, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Sessions are free. Attendees can bring a bag lunch. Beverages are provided.

Tire recycling event set for April 9

Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center in Unity will host a scrap tire recycling event from 8:30 a.m. to noon, April 9 at the center, 355 Pleasant Unity Mutual Road.

All types of tires will be accepted and eligible for a $1 discount. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. The cost is based on the type of tire. Last year, more than 800 tires were recycled, according to center officials.

Groups collecting illegally dumped tires can recycle them for free if they notify Cleanways before April 5 by calling 724-879-4020.
