Walk for a Healthy Community

East Suburban Citizen Advocacy will join Highmark officials with a team in the annual “Walk For a Healthy Community,” set for June 14 at Stage AE on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.

The ESCA team is seeking donations and participants.

Walk-day registration will take place at 7:45 a.m. at Stage AE, 400 North Shore Drive in Pittsburgh. A 5K walk will begin at 9 a.m., with a 1-mile walk starting at 9:15 a.m.

The window for donations will remain open through June 30.

ESCA, based in Murrysville, provides advocacy and build inclusive opportunities for those with developmental disabilities. For more, see EastSuburbanCitizenAdvocacy.org.

Blood drives

Murrysville recreation officials will partner with the American Red Cross to host blood drives on July 16, Sept. 11 and Nov. 11.

Drives will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Avenue. To register and schedule an appointment, see RedCrossBlood.org.

Temporary Route 380 light will become permanent

Construction on the intersection of Route 380 and Saltsburg Road began May 19.

Canonsburg-based Olympus Energy funded temporary traffic improvements as part of its Hermes fracking well pad project, built nearby on the Murrysville/Plum border off Logan’s Ferry Road. The new work will make those improvements permanent.

Murrysville officials did not have an estimate on how long the work will last.

Fishing derby

The Sportsmen and Landowners Alliance of Murrysville will host the annual SLAM Youth Fishing Derby at 9 a.m. May 17.

It will be for children age 15 and under. The pond will be stocked at 8 a.m. Children are not required to have a fishing license. The morning will include food trucks, prizes and giveaways.

Nail spa grand reopening

The Nature Nail Spa, 4950 William Penn Highwy in Murrysville, will host a grand re-opening at its newly renovated location from 2-5 p.m. May 18.

Owner Kim Nguyen of Penn Township said she has upgraded the salon’s chairs and equipment and added more products.

“We wanted to create more of a high-end experience, and with ATA Martial Arts moving out, we were able to get a little more space and do some more,” Nguyen said.

Light refreshments will be provided at the grand opening.

Symphony East presents ‘Best of Broadway’

The Symphony East’s May 19 program will featured Aria412 performing a variety of Broadway hits.

It will be at 1 p.m. at The Lamplighter, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem.

Reservations are not required. The cost is $15, with all proceeds going to support the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Dog training demonstration

Dog trainer Kevin Ziegler will host a dog training demonstration at 6 p.m. May 22 at Sardis Park.

Ziegler, who has 47 years of canine training experience, will cover basic obedience, crate training, the basics of hunting and retrieving and preventing gun-shy behavior.

Participants are asked not to bring their dogs.

Live music at Joey’s the Edge

Joey’s the Edge in Export will host a summer concert series. Shows will take place from 7-10 p.m. This season’s schedule is:

Camp Invention

Students in kindergarten through sixth grades are invited to take part in Camp Invention, a nationally recognized summer enrichment program, which will take place at several locations this summer in Murrysville.

Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by the new class of inductees at the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

It will be held June 16-20 at Franklin Regional Intermediate School, 4125 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

Rewind Reuse center workshops

The Rewind Reuse Center in Export will offer five mini-camp sessions for elementary students who have completed grades 2-5. The cost is $5 per week, per child. Each session can accommodate 15 students. Sessions include:

• June 17 and 19, “Art Party” with lots of painting

• June 24 and 26, “Timber Gizmos and Games,” focusing on wood and hardware

• July 15 and 17, “Fantastic Fibers,” working with fabric and felt

• July 22 and 24, “Stupendous Sculpture,” working with clay shells and wire

• August 5 and 7, “Perfectly Paper,” focused on journals, folding and quilling

The center will also be closed the weeks of June 30, Aug. 18 and Aug. 24.
